Volkswagen’s Award-Winning New Touran

The new Volkswagen Touran with its top-of-the-line auto parts like Volkswagen master cylinder is now offered with 125kW/170hp TSI engine. This direct injection engine is equipped with a supercharger and turbocharger that comes with a unique DSG direct-shift gearbox and Highline equipment as standard. Such impressive combination is exclusive in the MPV field.

The team of Volkswagen engineers has turned an innovative concept into reality with its TSI technology. A supercharger operates in the lower rev ranges while a turbocharger at higher revs. The combination of these two creates a generous amount of power of 125kW/170hp, constant torque band of 240Nm from 1,500 rpm to 4,750 rpm and low fuel consumption of 7.6 liters/100km.

The technical basis for the Twincharger technology is provided by a 1,390 ccm four-cylinder engine that produces the dynamism of a 2.5-litre normally aspirated engine. The TSI delivers a maximum torque from as low as 1,500rpm. It can reach 100km/h in a matter of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 212km/h.

The TSI technology lives up to Volkswagen’s motto which is “maximum power-minimum consumption”. This technology is available in the Touran with the 103kW engine, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Golf Plus and Volkswagen Jetta. The 125kW Twincharger was also added to the top of the Volkswagen Touran range.

Volkswagen has already received three awards for its TSI engine in the international level. The first award received by the automaker was in the autumn of 2005, the What’s New prize from the American “Popular Science” magazine. The second came in the spring of 2006 when VW received the Paul Pietsch Prize in Germany. And the third award was received by VW in the UK, where the Twincharger was honored by the jury from the “International Engine of the Year” committee in 2006 winning the “1.0-1.4 Litre” category. The TSI was also voted as the “Best New Engine of 2006″. Read the rest of this entry »

Sneak Peek at the 2012 Subaru Impreza

Subaru’s smart compact Impreza is being updated and will be released in Fall 2011 for the 2012 model year. Available in four door sedan and five door hatchback, the all-wheel-drive Impreza offers impressive handling, a decent ride and if forecasts for the upcoming model year are correct, exceptional fuel economy.

Smallest Subaru

The Impreza is the smallest model sold by Subaru, a niche maker of all-wheel-drive cars. Every model Subaru makes is powered by all four wheels, giving its vehicles an edge that few other vehicles have. That edge, however, comes at a slight price premium and reduction in fuel economy, the latter though not as pressing an issue for 2012.

Indeed, Subaru estimates that the 2012 Impreza will deliver 36 mpg highway, about the same amount delivered by some of its front-wheel-drive competitors including the Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta and Chevolet Cruze.

Global Debut

The 2012 Subaru Impreza makes its global debut at the New York International Auto Show in April and will be built in Japan. Subaru production has been curtailed since a March 11 earthquake and tsunami affected a slice of the country, but the Impreza’s introduction isn’t expected to be delayed.

Details about the all new Impreza are sketchy, but based on press reports and previous concepts and model introductions, the car is expected to be powered by a 2.0-liter four, probably paired with a six-speed automatic. The current Impreza has been criticized for its tight rear passenger room, a problem Subaru may rectify with the new model. Subaru is tight-lipped about the car’s introduction, knowing that several of its competitors are ready to unveil new models of its own. Read the rest of this entry »
